HERD IMMUNITY, IS IT POSSIBLE? 3/21/21

The idea of society achieving herd immunity from Covid-19 is a topic of intense interest. Herd immunity implies group protection to the disease. This happens because enough people get the illness and/or vaccines. The leading theory is that 60-80% of society needs to be infected/vaccinated to achieve herd. Full community immunity may be unachievable, instead covid will likely become endemic. This means that it’s a permanent fixture in our lives. The good news is endemic infections are usually less severe. Many even hypothesize that eventually covid could resemble the common cold since most of society will have had covid or the vaccine multiple times allowing for greater immunity to the illness.

Traveling while vaccinated, is it safe? 3/22/21

We’ve been stuck at home for over a year and it sucks. But is it safe to travel? The reality is that if you’re vaccinated it appears safe to travel. While we don’t yet know for sure, it seems likely that vaccines reduce the spread of covid. This is probably due to the vaccinated having a lower viral load. To reduce vaccine hesitancy, we should reward vaccinated people with more freedoms, such as the ability to travel both domestically and internationally.

Governments may use the risk of variants as a reason to limit travel. This is misguided. By the time pharmaceutical companies redesign new vaccine formulas a new variant will circulate. The reality is that vaccines protect in multiple ways, and even if resistance develops you’ll have some protection. We can never bring our risk to zero. So the best approach is to vaccinate as many people as possible, update the vaccine when needed, and live our lives as normal once vaccinated.
